Yesterday night my daughter insisted on watching Spain Vs Germany football match in EURO 2024 and I agreed.
Both the teams played well, which heightened the excitement of the match. Spain appeared to dominate. The first half of the match ended without any goal being scored. However, shortly after the start of the second half, Dani Olmo, often noted for his youthful appearance scored the first goal for Spain. The goal ignited enthusiasm among the Spanish fans, who waved their national flags fervently.
Both the teams tried in vain to score until late in the game when Florian Wirtz scored a sensational goal, injecting high adrenaline into the match. This moment made Spanish fans and players anxious alike, as the hope of winning seemed to slip away. The wait for Spain’s success march was prolonged.
Again in extratime the first half went goalless and it appeared that the second half would end the same way. As penalties approached the tempers were running high, knowing the unpredictability of penalty shootouts. German players missed more opportunities than their opponents, causing disappointments among their fans.
I observed that my daughter slept comfortably leaving me at the mercy of the moment. As I lifted my eyes I saw a magical sequence of passes when finally Olmo shot the ball in the air, which was perfectly gauged by Merino. Merino acrobatically headed the ball into the net with such precision and power that it was a moment to be replayed again and again. He seemed to channel all his energy into the header sending the ball into the goal with incredible speed. It was a goal again for Spain at 119th minute, almost as if Merino was taking revenge for the last-minute goal by Wirtz.
I was sleepless for half an hour with an urge to tell someone, but everyone at home was asleep! That moment and the match taught me the importance of physical fitness, concentration, team work, dedication, commitment, and most importantly, a never-say-die attitude.
